Lunch time = lights out

Lunch time = lights out

It's about time to start thinking about lunch. Are you remembering to turn out your office light before stepping out for a while?

A lot of discussion and head nodding goes on about energy issues but the step that's often missing is the light that goes on (or off in this case) when people realize that "this means me." Next time you step out for lunch, a meeting, or the end of the day, flick the switch. And do the same for your neighbor (unless they're still in there).

This practice not only saves some energy but lets people know at a glance that you are not in the office (or you're taking a nap under your desk and wish not to be disturbed).

It's a small thing but turning out lights when not in use is the type of change for the better that everyone can work on right away and really adds up over time, especially when many people are on board with the idea. The benefits add up not only over time but are multiplied by the others you effect as a parent, spouse, sibling, kids, friends, coworkers.

WISE GUYS

This month's Wise Guy award goes to Jen Rogers who is known to have made the special effort of turning out her office light before going to lunch one day. "It's not a habit of mine but, hey, this makes sense and I'm willing to change," she said.

Keep up the good work, Jen!
