Trash Talk

The average American generates approximately 4.6 pounds of solid trash per day.
Every year, the United States generates approximately 230 million tons of trash. That's enough to fill a convoy of garbage trucks long enough to wrap around the Earth six times!
At the consumption level of the average American, at least four additional planets worth of resources would be needed to support the planet’s 6 billion inhabitants.

See what’s in America ’s trash by visiting www.epa.gov/epaoswer/non-hw/reduce/catbook/what.htm.

What to do about it in the office...

Reuse

  • Print on scrap paper when possible
  • Save packing boxes for your conferences or give them to our MASB print shop
  • Water bottles (or bring in a cup/thermos)
  • Save napkins and plastic ware (unused preferably) from catered meetings for daily office use

Reduce Use

  • Print double-sided when possible
  • Set meetings with washable coffee mugs and pitchers of water instead of disposable cups and water bottles
  • Bring your lunch in washable containers

Recycle

  • Office paper (MELG recycle service even accept windowed envelopes, staples, paper clips, and glossy paper - please no card stock or paper wrappers)
  • Newspaper goes into a separate container but each office should have designated place
  • Pop cans are worth $ in Michigan - take advantage of it
  • Plastic bottles can go to James or someone in your office that's willing to take them to a recycle facility
