Office Paper -
Re-use

Printing on scrap paper

Want to save costs and the environment with just a click of a button at work? Standard office paper accounts for about $15,000 each year building-wide. There are several ways we aim to reduce that amount. Something all of us can do each day from our own desk is to print on scrap paper whenever practical.

Print on scrap paper whenever possible.
Several departments in the MELG building have begun stocking the bypass tray of main printers with scrap paper. So, if you're printing something that doesn't need to be saved or presented, consider selecting the scrap paper tray. It's easy to do and initial analysis shows it could reduce paper consumption by 20% or more. (For more help, contact James.)

Follow these easy steps (details may vary from machine to machine):

1. Select File-Print:

2. Open the Properties of your printer:

3. Go to SetUp to select the Bypass tray either from the drop-down paper source menu or clicking on the tray location in the printer graphic:

Other helpful paper-saving tips around the office:

  • Don't print out emails unless you have to.
If it's just something you're going to read, then discard/recycle, consider saving the paper or printing it on scrap.
  • Print double-sided any time you can.
Make a habit of asking presenters and thinking double-sided on materials (and don't forget, PowerPoint can print multiple slides per page).
  • Save archives digitally instead of on paper.
This not only reduces waste but saves physical storage space and becomes digitally searchable by name, date, etc.
  • Consider "paperless meetings."
It's already been successful in many venues. Make presentation material available digitally before the event, and let participants print their own materials. This distributes printing costs and eliminates the over-run on printing that speakers/coordinators do for unknown participant turnout.
