Program 1: Roberto Clemente Bilingual Reading First Program
District: Detroit Public Schools
Purpose: This school demonstrates successfully how a public school has adapted to its population and community.
Uniqueness: This school has instituted a bilingual Reading First program.
This school makes use of public school and Title I funds to educate a predominately bilingual student population.
Program 2: Davis Aerospace Technical High School
Purpose: To train students for careers in aircraft maintenance and aviation flight science.
Uniqueness: It is the nation’s only public H.S. Aerospace/Aviation program that is adjoined with a local community airport. (Coleman A. Young Municipal Airport)
Program 3: Detroit International Academy
Purpose: To offer young women a college pre-curriculum that allows students to flourish academically with an emphasis on mathematics, science and leadership development.
Uniqueness: It is the first all-girls public college preparatory school in Michigan.
Program 4: Foreign Language Immersion Cultural Studies School/FLICS
Purpose: To produce students who are proficient in a second language (French, Spanish, Japanese, or Chinese) using the early total immersion delivery system.
Uniqueness: Immersion programs that house four languages are especially rare in an urban setting.
Program 5: Halley Magnet M.S./Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program
Purpose: To increase the number of historically underrepresented minority students who are motivated and prepared and mathematics-related fields.
Uniqueness: Teachers are trained to deliver curriculum which includes internet training, science fair project, multi-cultural projects, field trips, corporate and university seminars, mentors and hands-on experiments.
Program 6: Avondale H.S. Academic Center – Increase Student Achievement Now!
District: Avondale School District
Purpose: With the use of mentor teachers, students take greater responsibility for their own success.
Uniqueness: Student accountability, mentoring, relationships, and the elimination of missing assignments are the keys to student success. Avondale High School ’s Academic Center has become the heart of their educational environment. Over 70% of Avondale’s students take an Academic Center as one of their seven classes. The Average GPA of their students has risen by 18% over the past four years.
Program 8: Kindergarten Chinese Immersion Program
District: Van Buren Public Schools
Purpose: To provide kindergarten students with an immersion of Mandarin Chinese.
Uniqueness: This is a cooperative effort between Van Buren Public Schools and the Confucius Institute at Michigan State.
There is sponsorship through the university.
Program: Ford Career-Technical Center Program
District: Wayne-Westland Schools
Purpose: To provide unique career exploration experiences to students.
Uniqueness: Partnership with Ford and opportunities in a structured setting to prepare for the world of work, including Café Marquette with food prepared by students in culinary classes.
