July 7, 2005, the Michigan Association of School Administrators
(MASA) named William H. Mayes as its new Executive Director.
Mayes has served for 12 years as the superintendent of the
Huron Intermediate School District (ISD) in Bad Axe, Mich.
He replaces Mike Flanagan, who left MASA to become Michigan’s
state superintendent.
Mayes, who begins his duties
with MASA on August 1, brings a wide-ranging set of experiences
and affiliations to his new position. He has been a member
of MASA for 18 years, serving as a region president, committee
chairperson, and Executive Board Director and President of
MASA in 2003-04. Mayes also serves on the boards of the American
Association of School Administrators (AASA) and Association
of Educational Service Agencies (AESA). He has participated
in government relations and legislative committee work for
AESA and the Michigan Association of Intermediate School Administrators
(MAISA).
“I
look forward to serving school administrators in this new
position,” said Mayes. “I plan to work closely
with Michigan’s many education organizations to find
effective ways to support our members in their critical work
of making sure students succeed.
Mayes lives in Port Austin, Mich., with wife Karen, who is
a retired high school counselor. He was selected by a search
committee headed by past-president of MASA, John D. Vaara,
who said Mayes was chosen from an excellent field of candidates.
“The experience, and knowledge
Bill brings to MASA is invaluable,” said Vaara. “The
Executive Board is looking forward to working with him.”
Mayes began his educational career
in 1969 after earning a B.A. in Communications and Political
Science from Michigan State University. He spent three years
as a speech and government teacher at Fowlerville Community
Schools, then was promoted to serve as an assistant principal
there for another three years. Mayes became principal at Hartland
Middle School in 1975. He later was tapped to be assistant
superintendent for instruction at Hartland Consolidated Schools
before moving in 1979 to North Huron Schools in Kinde, Mich.
where he served first as principal and then as superintendent.
Mayes moved to the Huron ISD
in 1991, serving first as Administrator of Student Instructional
Programs then as superintendent from 1993 until the present.
He holds a Master’s degree in Education Administration
from Michigan State University and has pursued advanced graduate
coursework from both MSU and Eastern Michigan University.
MASA
is a statewide association which represents the superintendents
and first-line administrators of Michigan’s local and
intermediate school districts. The mission of MASA is to develop
leadership and unity within its membership to achieve the
continuous improvement of public education in Michigan.
