Does your district have the 'SET Advantage?'

SET helps Michigan schools
SET SEG has the advantage of knowing the school market, since that is our only business. We are school insurance specialists. SET has offered fringe benefits to schools since 1971. Combined with our sister organization SEG, we provide insurance coverage to over 500 school districts in Michigan. SET negotiates rates and fees based on a large block of insurance business and is able to obtain cost concessions due to volume. This bargaining power is the ‘SET Advantage.’

What is the ‘SET Advantage?’

  • SET negotiates fees with some insurance carriers that are as much as 50 percent lower than what they would quote to an individual district.
  • SET’s bargaining power is used to offer small districts plans that normally are available only to large districts.
  • SET has negotiated special riders through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) that usually are not offered to small districts.

How does SET partner with schools?

  • SET reviews all carriers in the marketplace, then determines which carrier is best for the plan being developed.
  • We negotiate with that carrier to create the best possible program and price, using the larger enrollment numbers we gain through our partnerships with districts.
  • At the district level, SET is the focal point, providing service through our Lansing office.
  • We have a dedicated Member Services team to help subscribers resolve any claim questions that may arise.
  • SET combines all billings from our partners and issues a single invoice to the school district. The district only deals with SET for payment, though coverage may be placed with as many as five different carriers.

How is SET different from an insurance consultant?

  • SET provides districts with a comprehensive explanation of the insurance programs that we have available.
  • We compare these insurance programs with a district’s current plans when possible.
  • SET recommends the programs that will best fit a district’s needs and budget.

Remember that insurance consultants perform similar services, and they may be compensated for those services in two ways. If your district wishes to use an insurance consultant, we recommend finding one that charges a “Fee for Service.” With such a consultant, your district will pay a flat fee for his or her analysis and recommendations, and the full field of insurance carriers will be researched and presented. You are more likely to get an unbiased opinion about the best insurance plan for your district. A consultant that receives commission from the carriers he or she represents may not present plans that are more advantageous to your district, if the consultant is not an agent for that carrier. Always consider how the consultant is being reimbursed.
