Michigan high schools earn distinction in Best High Schools 2008 Search

Thirteen Michigan high schools earned silver medal distinction in the recent U.S. News & World Report release. Dozens more earned bronze medals in the rankings, which took into consideration how schools scored on state standardized tests, how each school’s disadvantaged students did and how well schools did at preparing students for college-level course work.

The magazine, in collaboration with School Evaluation Services, a K-12 education and data research and analysis business that provides parents with education data on schoolmatters.com analyzed academic and enrollment data from more than 18,000 public high schools using a three-step analysis:

  • They measured how each school's students performed on state tests, adjusting for student circumstances.
  • They next evaluated how well each school's disadvantaged students did.
  • They looked at whether the school was successful in providing college-level coursework

The top schools were placed into gold, silver, or bronze medal categories.
