2008 Winners’ Circle recipients to be announced at MASA Conference

At this month’s MASA Distinguished Administrators’ Luncheon, 13 new MASA members will be inducted into the Winners’ Circle. These members will be honored by the Membership Services Committee for launching or adapting a successful program or innovative idea that has had a significant, positive impact on their school district that can be used through other districts across the state.

As we close out 2007, we want to highlight the few remaining Winners’ Circle inductees from last year:

Dr. Judith Pritchett & Thomas Laskowski, Center Line Public Schools , Region 9

Center Lines Public Schools’ “COME ON HOME” program

Since the 2005, Center Lines Public Schools’ “COME ON HOME” program has offered extra academic support to students in grades K-8 by utilizing the skills of our retired teaching staff. Retired staff are encouraged to "Come On Home" and work a minimum of 2 hours/week with 'at risk' students who have been identified by their classroom teacher as needing additional academic support in reading or mathematics. Retired teachers are paid for their time. This is a 'win-win' situation for students and staff. We know the professionalism and quality of teaching skills from our retired staff and students are well supported with either one-on-one or small group support. This program assists us with strategies to continue to increase student achievement which is the only goal for Center Line Public Schools.

Daniel Bachman, McBain Rural Agricultural School District , Region 2

Bntramural Basketball League

McBain High School students have benefited from a January intramural basketball league, designed and implemented by the superintendent, Dan Bachman. This is the fifth year of the program and benefits include increased student motivation and attendance. Research indicates a positive correlation between student participation in extracurricular activites and achievement.

Students who have never participated on a school team become involved. Players are drafted by lottery with at least one staff member serving as a player. Games are played before school during January and a championship game is played during a high school pep assembley. The entire emphasis is upon making every student feel a part of our school.
