Governor Jennifer Granholm said she could support concepts that provide for merit pay for teachers and more choice for parents in urban districts as a way to deal with ongoing education challenges. With President Barack Obama and his education secretary giving new prominence to merit pay and expanded charters, Ms. Granholm told reporters, “I think the Obama administration is on to something. When you're looking at best practices, I think we can't pull anything off the table it if leads to better education.” Part of the discussion would include lifting or removing the cap on the number of charter schools that can be authorized by universities. “It's worth pursuing to get the outcomes we want,” she said. Still, she said the subject has to be approached carefully. Source: Gongwer News Service, 3.17.09
